What does GPR concrete scanning find?

Rebar and its spacing, post-tension cables, electrical conduit, embedded pipe and voids under the slab, in slabs, walls and elevated decks. Radar sees a change in material, so it finds targets whether they are metal or not; what it cannot always do is name them. Where rebar and conduit run together we mark both and say so.

Can GPR see through metal decking or wire mesh?

Accepted Answer

No. Metal decking reflects the signal, so a slab on deck can only be scanned from the top for the concrete above the deck, and dense wire mesh near the surface can mask what sits below it. We tell you before we start when the construction limits the scan, and anything unresolved goes in writing.

Do you tell me how deep the rebar or conduit is?

Accepted Answer

We mark where each target sits in plan, not how deep it is. Radar depth estimates shift with the concrete's moisture and mix, and a wrong number is more dangerous than none. Treat every mark as a no-cut line, core beside it rather than through it, and hand-chip to expose anything you have to cross.

Is this a structural assessment?

Accepted Answer

No. We tell you what is inside the concrete and where; we do not tell you whether it is safe to cut there. That is the engineer's call. What we give the engineer is the rebar layout, cable locations and anything unusual, marked on the slab and, if you need it, photographed for the record.

Can you scan on the same visit as a utility locate?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and it is the cheapest way to get it. If we are already on site marking the yard or the parking lot, adding up to five scan locations on the same visit is a reduced add-on rather than a separate trip.
